Keto buttercream recipe
Even though you might think you’re not the buttercream type, this one is worth a try. The recipe is pretty basic, yet this keto buttercream is a real game-changer if you’re on a ketogenic diet and want low-carb cakes and other keto-baking recipes.
The proportions are pretty easy. You can easily conjure up your ketogenic buttercream with the same amount of butter and cream cheese. Then sweeten to your liking and add a pinch of vanilla – and boom you have a super delicious keto cream.
Do you adore chocolate? No problem! Simply add some cocoa powder (look in the ingredients list for the quantities) and you’re in (7th chocolate) heaven.
The trick is simply to get the right ingredients, so we’ve briefly described what you should look out for here.
The butter for the keto buttercream
Since you don’t heat the butter, organic quality is an absolute must. We also recommend using butter made from grass-fed milk as it has a particularly fresh and natural taste. Not only that, it is also much better for your health than most people think. Good quality butter, for example, is rich in vitamin K2 (which decalcifies the arteries) and an anti-inflammatory fatty acid called butyrate.

The cream cheese for the keto cake icing
Here too, we recommend using cream cheese from organic farming. However, since it is not as important as butter, you are free to choose whatever you like.
Vanilla and sweetener (keto-friendly)
If you want to stick to the recipe, we recommend using vanilla extract. Of course, you can also use vanilla beans, depending on how intense you want the taste. You are also free to choose the sweetener. You can use the same one you use for the keto cake. But if you are unsure, refer to our list of ingredients.
Ingredients for the keto buttercream
- 140 g unsalted organic butter (room temperature)
- 140 g cream cheese (room temperature)
- pinch of salt
- 115 g powdered erythritol or xylitol (depending on taste)
- 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
- 2-3 tablespoons cocoa powder (for the chocolate version
Instructions for the keto buttercream
Place the cream and butter cheese in a deep bowl. Using an electric mixer, beat the mixture until smooth (about 2 minutes).
Add a pinch of salt and the sweetener and continue beating until the dough is fluffy (8-10 minutes). Then add vanilla extract and beat until fully incorporated
.If you want to make the chocolate version, sift in the cocoa in batches and beat until fully incorporated.
One batch of buttercream is enough for about 12 muffins or a 20cm diameter cake.
